June, 2009 Mortgage Rates Rise
Don't look now, mortgage rates have risen to the highest level we have seen since last fall. Rates are still excellent, however, and sit now in the mid-5%'s.
The rise in rates may derail the recovery of the housing market which has been showing signs of life in recent weeks. The key is whether or not potential home buyers decide to continue with their plans to buy a home or pull back with the higher rates. It is possible that some borderline home buyers may not be approved now with the higher rates as the resulting higher payment may cause a loan denial. However, for most homebuyers, it must be remembered that rates are still extremely low historically.
Market indicators are suggesting that it is unlikely rates will drop to the levels we enjoyed this spring, and may go higher this summer, so it does appear that now is still the time to act if you are considering buying a home.
